Summer 2010

Summer is about to start here in UK. The weather is warming up.
We will soon get more of the sunshine and warm breeze.
Out we go for bar-b-cues in the backyard or front yard;
Gardening and other outdoor activities are plan for this summer;
or probably prepare for a beach and summer holiday breaks.

We begin to enjoy our summer rides with our sports car
and sports motorbike.  We also open our car's panoramic roof
or put on our gears for an enjoyable ride with our sports motorbike.
off the road we go either thru country road, motorway, along the hills, by the sea.
Having fresh air and experience the sunny day this summer is fun.
So let's make the most out of it !!!

"HOME"

...its a poem...

This is an inspirational thought or poem framed. I would like to share this with you. This was given to me by one of my closest sisters last Christmas 2008 when I went home for a short visit to my family.

What makes this framed poem so special is because my sister has cancer and yet has thought of giving each one of us a very nice gift. She also mentioned that this is the only frame left in store when she was looking for a gift that will suit me.

It’s been sometime since I’ve seen my family and it was also the time that we had our family reunion when all of us were gathered together last Christmas. We exchange gifts and this beautiful frame coming from my sister struck me most.

Staying away from my country and my family reminds me of them with this poem when I am on my own.

The British Queen’s Message for the Filipinos

I am now residing in England, UK and I am still updated on what is going on in our country, Philippines. Thanks for the television news and internet. It is now easy for us to be updated with any political and social events around the world.

I have written an article about our former President Corazon Cory Aquino’s death which I just published last week.

I am very pleased today when I happened to come across the Yahoo website news about the British Queen Elizabeth II who also condoled with us, the Filipino people for mourning on the death of Cory Aquino.

I would like to share the news I have read from the Yahoo Website:

British Queen saddened with death of RP's 'true queen'

MANILA - The reigning Queen of the British monarch joined people in the Philippines and all over the world in mourning the death of former President Corazon Aquino.
In a message, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II said, "I am saddened to hear of the death of Corazon 'Cory' Aquino the former President of the Republic of the Philippines."

She added, "I send my sincere condolences to her family and to the people of the Philippines."

President Aquino has been called the "icon of democracy" for leading a bloodless people power revolution in 1986 to topple former President Marcos, a dictator. She died last August 1, 2009. In the funeral mass before she was laid to rest on Wednesday, a priest referred to President Aquino as "the only true queen our people ever had." Fr. Catalino Arevalo said in his homily that President Aquino was a great leader because of her selflessness, faith and courage." President Aquino's term in office lasted only for 6 years--up to 1992.

On the other hand, Queen Elizabeth II is a true-blooded royalty. Her 57-year reign makes her the longest reigning British monarch.

Her message of condolence was conveyed to President Gloria Arroyo by British Ambassador to Manila, Peter Beckingham in an August 4 letter. It was coursed through Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo.

The brief message was signed "Elizabeth R."

I would like to dedicate this article to all my co-filipino readers and bloggers. Mabuhay and Pinoy!!!

The Icon of Philippine Democracy

Corazon “Cory”Aquino
(January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009)

Twenty-three years ago, as I recall –
I was 19 years old and one of the students in our University who joined the protest rally for “Change of Leadership and Democracy” in our country during the time of the known Dictator President Ferdinand Marcos. We were in our school uniform with yellow bands on our right arm and holding a stick tied with yellow ribbons. We marched from the University grounds down to the street and around the city. The street posts and trees were tied with yellow ribbons and we all gathered to the main city grand stand to simultaneously join the entire nation in a “call for change and freedom”.

The nation’s protest rally was led by this woman, known as “The Icon of Philippine Democracy” together with her were the former AFP Vice Chief of Staff Fidel V. Ramos, Minister of National Defence, Juan Ponce Enrile and Catholic Archbishop of Manila, Jaime Cardinal Sin - This was the time of what we call the “People Power (Yellow) Revolution” or the “Edsa Revolution”.

Now, the country is in mourning for Corazon “Cory” Conjuanco Aquino, the country’s First Woman President, who died on August 1, 2009 at 3:18 a.m. at the Makati Medical Center after an 18-month battle with colon cancer. She was 76.

She was also known of the following:
The “guiding light of Philippine democracy”
The first woman commander-in-chief

She was hailed by the Time Magazine on August 1999:
The first and only Asian woman to be The Third Woman of the Year.”
The 20 Most Influential Asians of the Century
The Time’s Woman of 1986

The Martin Luther King Jr. Non-Violent Peace Prize and the 1998 Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding.

Cory Aquino’s revolution with a human face was no less a triumph for women the world over. The person known as the “Mother of the Nation” managed to lead a revolt and rule a republic without ever relinquishing her buoyant calm or her gift for making politics and humanity companionable. In a nation dominated for decades by a militant brand of macho politics, she conquered it with tranquillity and grace.

Yellow was the colour of protest against the Marcos dictatorship and Mrs. Aquino ascended to the presidency clad in fighting yellow.

She was one of the Presidents of the Phillipines I first voted for when I was 18 years old in the snap election held last February 7, 1986.

Castles Initially Visited

When I first came to visit England, UK – I get the chance to visit the following castles:

1. Lewes Castle - one of the best preserved castle barbican's in England. Situated high above the valley of the River Ouse, on the edge of the South Downs, the little Saxon town of Lewes. When William the Conqueror returned to Normandy in 1067, he made grants of land, including the town of Lewes, to one of his lords, William de Warenne. Within a few years Warenne had built an unusual motte and bailey stronghold here, surrounded by defensive earthworks and a moat. Lewes Castle became his main residence, although he did build two other castles, one in Surrey and one in Norfolk. The full extent of the oval-shaped bailey constructed by Warenne has been lost among the town's development but both the mottes (mounds), one to the west and one to the east of the bailey, have survived.

2. Arundel Castle - Erected shortly after the Norman Conquest, by Roger de Montgomery in 1067. This Castle was to protect the gap that had been carved by the River Arun through the South Downs. A large castle, of traditional motte-and-bailey design, with the motte 70ft (21.2m) high and the baileys extending north and south when originally constructed. The buildings today rest on 12th century foundations and are predominantly from the late 1800s.

3. Bodiam Castle - is situated beside the River Rother in East Sussex and was built in the late 14th century by a veteran of King Edward III's wars with France, originally as a coastal defence. In 1385, Sir Edward Dalyngrygge was given permission to fortify his house against invasion from France, but then decided to build a new stone castle a short distance away from the house. What can be seen today is a relatively small, picturesque building that symbolises the movement from traditional medieval castle to comfortable manor house. The castle is surrounded by a wide moat. The moat was created from an artificial lake which, in turn, originated from allowing the river to flow into a rectangular area of marshy land.

When me & my partner went to Scotland, UK – I also got the chance to visit the Edinburgh Castle.
